As early as 1896, a group of Greenwich Village artists, poets and other artistic and literary personalities were meeting weekly at Maria Del Prato's Italian restaurant on MacDougal Street. The group, which became known as The Pleaides Club, included Paul Du Chaillu, Mark Twain, Stephen Crane, William Garrison, Clara Louise Kellogg and other luminaries among its early members. As it grew and needed larger quarters, the group first moved to the Black Cat then to the Hungaria, eventually settling in at the Hotel Brevoort in 1906. The club's mission was simply to provide a convivial and friendly audience to inexperienced artists through its weekly meetings and publication of their work in its yearbook, The Pleiad. Good .

XVI, 202; [2], 203-438, [2]; XXVI, 192; [2], 193-447, [1] pp.A limited (1000 copies), "extra illustrated", 4 volume edition of Henry Angelo's Reminiscences or memoirs. Henry Charles William Angelo (1756-1835) was an English fencing master and the son of the Italian fencing master Domenico Angelo (1717-1802). Since his father had introduced fencing as an elite sport and was known for teaching royals, many members of the high society followed suit and were taught by the Angelo family of fencers. The present work is a new edition of The reminiscences of Henry Angelo with memoirs of his late father and friends ... (1830), now with 68 plates reproducing original prints in the collection of Joseph Grego (1843-1908). To these 68 illustrations, more than 280 illustrations were added to make this "extra illustrated edition".Bindings show very slight signs of wear, spines have faded, fore-edges and foot-edges untrimmed and foxed. Occasional, very slight foxing (mostly on the first and last few leaves of each volume), otherwise internally clean. With a small water stain in the lower gutter margin of the first few leaves of vol. 1, hinges of vol. 2 weak. These 4 volumes of the extensively illustrated, limited edition of the Reminiscences are overall in good condition.l Cf. Bartlett, William Henry. Engraved by E. Smith.
[Syria, Holy Land, Asia Minor] Bazzar at Jaffa, the Ancient Joppa (caption title). [ORIGINAL STEEL ENGRAVED PRINT].
London, Jackson, Fisher, (1836). Print. Original single-sheet steel engraving of a very fine quality. Overall size ca. 215 x 270 mm. Image size ca. 130 x 190 mm. A two-line caption engraved at bottom in elegant handtooled open-face and italic types. Engraved Artist's and Engraver's signatures underneath image. Engraved Publisher's line below. The print is in its original state, trimmed and gilded on three sides. It is printed with warmer ink, somewhat more dramatic in mood, with fine, crisp detail, subtlety and elegance. In overall fine condition. Preserved in pH-balanced, acid-free Renaissance archival paper. ~ A delicately executed steel engraving, representing a major illustrative work on 19th century Palestine, Syria, and Asia Minor. William Henry Bartlett (born London, 1809) was one of the foremost illustrators of topography of his generation. He travelled extensively throughout Britain, the Americas, and the Middle East, producing his work on location. In 1854 he made his last trip to the Holy Land; he died of fever on board a French ship on his return voyage to England. Bartlett's primary concern was to extract the picturesque aspects of a place and render "lively impressions of actual sights", as he wrote in the preface to "The Nile Boat" (London, 1849). His work became widely known through the numerous engravings after the original drawings and paintings he made. The interest in these engravings today is as much for the exquisite quality of the rendering and presentation of the architecture of the period, as it is for the representation of the landscape. Published in 1836 by Peter Jackson, Late Fisher, Son & Co. of London, it was originally accompanied by descriptions written by John Carne. Clamshell .
